• The Structure

This historic 1 1/2 story Pioneer Log Cabin located on Secor Road, and was originally part of a 160-acre parcel in the NW portion of Bedford Twp. Section 8. The cabin was built in the late 1830’s on the Bullock Farm, famous for having the largest (50’x200′) Dairy barn in all of Monroe County, if not all of Lower Michigan. (In 1892, the Bullock One Room School was also built in this section; it burned down in 1945). Later on, the property belonged to Herbert J. Chittenden and the 160 acres were managed by his daughter Helen and husband, Charles McBride. From 1975 until the late 1980’s, the expanded 199-acre parcel was listed as the Log Cabin Estates. Following that period, the area was divided into small tracts and sold to a variety of individuals. Most recently, Dean Vollmar purchased seven acres in 1989 and named it, appropriately, Cabin Creek Horse Farm. Today the Vollmars are offering to share this historic Last Pioneer Cabin with our Community in an effort to preserve an exciting part of our past.

  • Available to the Community

Once this cabin is restored, it will be open to the public periodically as an active learning centre -a Living History Museum, featuring 19th Century “Lost Arts” and lifestyles. The activities will be administered by the Century House Preservationists and this historic site will be dedicated to the preservation, interpretation & celebration of the history of the Bedford Township area and could also benefit tourism in Monroe County.

  • What is the Cabin’s Long-Term Future?

A recent assessment showed that once repaired, this Last Pioneer Cabin could stand for yet another hundred years. A group of dedicated individuals have agreed to proceed in this worthwhile effort: THE PRESERVATION OF THE LAST PIONEER CABIN FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS. The renovation process is anticipated to be a two to three-year project, as we proceed through the various reconstruction stages. We will need both financial and volunteer help from community-minded individuals like you to achieve our goal.
